An economic headwind swept the coworking community in 2020 behind two COVID driven cold-fronts. And we are not alone either - according to a Global Coworking Growth Study 2020, the Google keyword search for "coworking" is way down, and this industry leading indictor forecasts a slow patch in otherwise stellar demand for coworking spaces, at least in the short term.
This shake-up presents a difficulty for would be coworkers - finding and comparing those shared spaces left standing! For instance The Tech Collective Havelock N and Ahuriri, MakePlace, Cultivate Hawke's Bay and Modern Eclectic all show in listings, but all appear to have closed their doors to co-workers by year end 2020.
To assist readers in finding a suitable coworking space for their needs, your editor has listed shared spaces still operating in the Hawke's Bay, and still providing coworking space and services.
But what information should this list have? A useful comparison should focus on what coworkers value most. Things like:
Location - central city, suburban or rural
Size - international average is 650 sqm (from Global 2020 Coworker Growth Study)
Workspace choices available - coworking desks or private serviced offices
Look and feel - think modern, corporate, cheerful, casual...
Terms of business (monthly, daily, hourly).
Cost - yes dollars are important, but your editor decided not to list pricing information, as this can become quickly outdated and unhelpful. It is also often unclear as to the value a price represents - for example are all the amenities included? Or are some big things charged as extras - like meeting rooms? Potential coworkers would be wise to establish the expected full occupancy cost, not just the advertised price.
Perhaps most important is the community created by the existing coworkers. This is wildly subjective of course and difficult to list fairly, as everyone will experience a coworking space differently. So this "community vibe" is also not listed. Maybe this will be added later with user feedback to the editor. However as a general comment for all shared spaces - most coworkers love being based in one. And your editor obviously can, and has commented for Hastings HIVE.
So to the list of shared spaces operating as we near the end of 2020. A drum roll please...
